We’ve all been there—standing in that slow-moving queue, watching the airline agent scrutinise every bag with military precision. One by one, passengers ahead of you nervously wedge their luggage into the dreaded metal sizer, some sighing in relief, others groaning as they reach for their wallets. 

Then it hits you. What if my bag’s too big? You start mentally retracing your packing choices—did you really need that extra pair of shoes? Your stomach tightens. I can’t be paying more for my luggage than I did for the flight! 

Your turn comes. You force a smile as you hand over your boarding pass, but before you can make a clean getaway, you hear it—the dreaded words. 

"Can you pop your bag in the sizer, please?" 

Your heart pounds as you slide it in, willing it to fit. But it doesn’t. Not even close. You give it a little nudge, maybe even a discreet shove. Still no luck. The agent shakes their head, and just like that, you’re hit with a hefty charge just to bring your bag along. A painful start to your trip—and one you could have avoided.

easyJet

• Cabin Bag: All passengers can bring one small under-seat cabin bag measuring up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm, with no weight limit specified, but must be able to lift and carry it themselves. ​

Choose the Right Bag: Opt for a lightweight, durable cabin bag that meets your airline's size specifications. Amazon have a great selection of cabin approved bags. 

Plan Your Wardrobe: Select versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched. Stick to a neutral colour palette to maximise outfit combinations. Also wearing your bulkiest and heaviest items to travel in will save space and weight. 

Utilise Packing Cubes: These help compress clothing and keep your bag organised, making it easier to access items without unpacking everything. 

Or Use Vacuum Bags for Clothes: My personal choice - Vacuum-seal or compression bags can significantly reduce the volume of your clothing, allowing you to fit more into your hand luggage. They are especially useful for bulky items like jackets and jumpers that you can’t wear. You can either get a handheld Vacuum pump or opt for roll-up compression bags that push air out manually. 

Limit Shoes: Shoes can take up significant space. Wear your bulkiest pair during travel and pack one additional versatile pair. 

Decant Toiletries: Transfer liquids into travel-sized containers (100 ml or less) and store them in a clear, resealable plastic bag to comply with security regulations. My personal favourite are these compact travel bottles from Shein – they take up minimal room and are great for up to a week’s stay! 

Use Multi-Functional Items: Pack items that serve multiple purposes, such as a sarong that can function as a scarf, blanket, or beach cover-up. 

Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling clothes can save space and reduce creases. Place heavier items at the base of your bag and lighter ones on top. 

Wear Bulky Items: If you're bringing a jacket or bulky jumper, wear it during your journey to free up space in your luggage. 

Be Mindful of Accessories: Limit jewellery and other accessories to essentials. Consider packing a small, versatile selection that complements all your outfits. 

Prepare for Laundry: For longer trips, plan to do laundry. Pack a small amount of detergent or note nearby launderettes at your destination.
